YISD Technology Chromebook Guide: How to Powerwash a Student Chromebook

Created by: YISD Service Desk

Last Updated: May 2025

Using Keyboard Shortcut:

    1. Sign out of your Chromebook if not already.
    2. Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
    3. Click Restart.
    4. Select Powerwash and then Continue.
    5. Your Chromebook will restart and begin the Powerwash process.

 Set Up Your Chromebook:

  • After the Powerwash is complete, your Chromebook will restart and present you with the initial setup screen, just like when you first got it.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Chromebook and sign in with your Google Account.
  • Reinstall any apps you need from the Google Play Store and configure your settings.

Important Considerations:

  • Data Loss: Powerwashing permanently erases all local data on your Chromebook.
  • Google Account: Your Google account and its associated data (e.g., Google Drive files, synced settings) are not affected by the Powerwash.
  • When to Powerwash: Consider Powerwashing your Chromebook when experiencing persistent software issues, preparing to sell or give it away, or wanting a fresh start.
